♥ teddy bears don't need hearts as they are already stuffed with love.

when i first saw these pictures of the holiday decorations at the galeries lafayette
in paris on the blog bardot in blue, i was A) super jealous that i was not in paris myself
to witness such a grand spectacle and B) suddenly struck by a craving for teddy grahams and
C) totally reminded of a book my mom once read me about a bear and a lonely doll.

written in the late 1950's, the lonely doll by photographer/model dare wright
went straight to the new york times best seller list for children's books
and was followed by 18 more. while the tales of edith, the lonely doll are said
to reflect dare wright's troubled childhood, they are also visually striking.
shot entirely in black and white and featuring ms. wright's very own childhood
doll, (whom she created a vast wardrobe for and also added hair!), these
books are still considered a true work of art.

very little is known about accomplished author/ photographer dare wright.
to this day, only one biography has been written. (listen to the npr interview here.)
and looking at her beautiful pictures, one may forget the inner sadness that came
through in her work. didn't she and her doll share an eerie likeness?

  6. The Lonely Doll was my very favorite childhood book--I was always completely freaked about the father bear spanking her--and reading it again as an adult even more so...they were beautiful books though and amazingly staged--thanks for the memories Sami...

  7. I can't lie, those books look terrifying to me!! Something about old-school dolls posed in human-like situations in black and white reminds me of my nightmares. But they definitely do look like works of art.

  8. Whoa, she really does look just like her doll! That's a little creepy...

I love the teddy bear exhibit though! Teddy bears are my favorite (spoken like a true 25 year old...) I'd love to see it in person too - can't we just go to Paris?
