my bestfriend marykate recently asked me to talk about the origin of the fashion term,
"pocket book," and after seeing some new additions to kate spade's book clutch collection,
i felt compelled to look into the meaning of such a seemingly illogical word:
according to this article, "in 1617, the word surfaced to denote a small book, now called
a notebook; it was a book of addresses, or notes, that fit in a pocket. by 1816, women were
carrying a book-like case with compartments for papers and knickknacks,
and they called it a purse, handbag, or... pocketbook."
ah ha.
ah ha, indeed!
ReplyDeleteI love the book clutches so so so much! And Pride and Prejudice is such a beautiful book.
