this weekend i watched an inspiring documentary called wasteland (2010)
featuring contemporary artist, vik muniz as he journeys from his apartment in
brooklyn back to his native brazil, to visit one of the largest landfills,
jardim gramacho, and the people who make their living
by picking recycled goods day after day.
the garbage pickers, aka catadores, live on the outskirts of this grand
garbage heap, working and toiling without much hope of ever leaving.
for the purpose of this documentary, muniz asked a number
of these colorful characters to tell their story, and re-create famous
artistic poses to help him create large scale pieces of heartbreakingly
beautiful art from the very garbage they work in.
This is mighty awesome!
